Biogas has a limit.
Economic modelling shows the UK won’t be able to meet 100% of today’s gas demand with biomethane. Decarbonisation needs to happen to reduce reliance on gas in general.
Biogas isn’t a silver bullet
We advocate for a responsible decarbonisation strategy that follows four key steps.
AvoidStart by avoiding the use of fossil fuels altogether through reviewing and designing operations to minimise carbon intensity from the outset.
ReduceNext, reduce your reliance on fossil fuels by improving energy efficiency. Upgrade equipment, optimise operations, and insulate buildings or pipes to limit unnecessary energy use.
SubstituteFor processes that are harder to electrify, substitute fossil fuels with zero or lower-carbon alternatives—such as sustainable biomethane.
SequesterFinally, capture and sequester any remaining emissions. Technologies like BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) and DACCS (Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage) help remove residual CO₂ from the atmosphere.
