Growing Soil Carbon Through Circular Farming

At Future Biogas, soil carbon is more than a metric — it’s a cornerstone of our regenerative approach to farming. By returning 100% of the digestate from our anaerobic digestion process back to farmland, we replenish soils with organic matter and nutrients that help sequester carbon.

This practice enhances the soil structure, boosts microbial activity, and improves the land’s natural ability to hold onto water and nutrients. It also displaces the need for synthetic fertilisers, which are typically mined and transported over long distances. Our local supply chains and circular farming models mean carbon doesn’t just stay in the ground — it thrives there.

Science-Backed Soil Innovation

We’re not just assuming these benefits; we’re actively measuring them. Future Biogas is currently undertaking trials to assess different technologies for measuring soil organic carbon. This is alongside our field trials testing seed varieties, under-sowing with cover crops, and using companion cropping to protect soil structure and fix nitrogen naturally.

Our independent Agriculture Advisory Board, comprised of leading scientists and agronomists, is supporting this work to ensure it’s grounded in the latest peer-reviewed research and scaled with credibility.

From Soil Health to Climate Resilience

Healthy soils are biodiverse soils — and increased soil carbon not only benefits climate goals, but also supports a thriving soil microbiome. This underground ecosystem drives nutrient cycling, suppresses disease, and builds natural resilience to extreme weather events.

At Future Biogas, we believe improving soil carbon is a win-win-win: it empowers farmers with healthier crops, supports climate mitigation by locking carbon underground, and fosters a regenerative agricultural model that puts long-term sustainability at the heart of our operations. Every acre we nourish helps deliver a more stable food system and a lower-carbon energy system, proving that climate progress can begin from the ground up.
