Overview

Richard Lewis is a 30-year veteran of the global energy markets.

He is the founder of Delta Energy Capital Sarl, a Swiss based advisor and investor in the Energy Transition space.  The portfolio is focused on themes of renewable electricity, renewable gas, sustainable biochar and carbon dioxide removals.

His relevant experience for the Biocarbon Company includes:

  • Conversion of Lynemouth coal-fired power station to run on imported wood pellets.
  • Conversion of Tilbury power station to run on wood pellets
  • Managing the global biomass trading and sourcing operations of RWE
  • Founding and investing in Biocarbon Global, a producer of biochar in Zimbabwe, selling charcoal to a silicon refiner in South Africa.
  • Investing in and guiding the growth of Bio-Logical Carbon Ltd, a biochar producer selling biochar as a bio-fertiliser to receive CO2 removals credits.

In the 90’s he built the market’s largest UK electricity trading desk at Enron and ended up running most of Enron’s UK businesses.  Post collapse, he moved a team to Barclays where he managed the European power, gas and coal trading and origination teams and started what became one of the world’s largest carbon emissions trading desks.  He later ran global structured origination for all commodities and co-founded the Commodities Principal Investments group and then, in 2009, Richard joined RWE as Commercial Director for all Sales, Origination and Principal Investment activities of the company.  In his career he has developed, operated, bought and sold power stations of several fuel types, notably gas-fired 700MW Sutton Bridge; coal-fired 400MW Lynemouth and its subsequent conversion to biomass and solar PV 40MW Kencot.  Other investments have included coal mines and oil and gas fields.  Richard has served on numerous boards in executive and non-executive roles and he currently serves as a non-executive director of one of the largest European power and gas hedge funds, Nanook Energy.  Richard is now a private investor hunting for out-performing investment opportunities in the energy transition.  A qualified accountant with a BSc Hons in Chemistry from Bristol University, Richard lives with his wife and 3 children near Geneva in France.

He previously worked in senior roles in London and Geneva for RWE, Barclays and Enron. A qualified accountant with a BSc Hons in Chemistry from Bristol University, Richard lives with his wife and 3 children in Nyon, near Geneva.

Additionally, he is a director of 3i-backed FutureBiogas and Infinis, and is a director of the Nanook Energy hedge funds.

Bio-Logical Carbon Ltd – a UK owned but East African focused developer of biochar fertiliser for long term carbon dioxide removals, with an ambition to improve the depleted soils of East Africa and reduce its reliance on fossil-fuel based imported fertilisers.

Bio-Carbon Global – a UK incorporated, Zimbabwe-focused developer of biochar targeting the displacement of metallurgical coal in the silicon refining industry.

The BioCarbon Company – a developer of biochar plants in the US for displacement of metallurgical coal in steel and industrial production processes.
